While I was painting textural lines in working with the holographic series, I learned that I only needed to paint alternating strips of a subject, and the viewer would still be able to perceive nearly the entirety of the subject. This is because the viewer jumps in and fills in the blanks. Naturally, the process makes the painting appear more abstract, not the least of which is that the painting creates a different sense of depth. and of foreground and background. Equally important is the ability of the viewer to integrate two separate paintings into one, as though both are happening in the same “space”.
